Annie Oakley was born Phoebe Ann Mosey on August 13, 1860. She rose to fame with her amazing talent as a sharpshooter and exhibition sharpshooter that led to her starring in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. To show how talented she was, it is said that she could split a playing card edge-on and put five or six more holes in it touched the ground using a .22 caliber rifle at 90 feet.
Annie married Francis Butler, an Irish immigrant and they both joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show in 1995. Annie was quite small, only 5 feet tall and fellow performer, Sitting Bull gave her the name “Little Sure Shot”.
Not only was Annie famous throughout the United States but in Europe too. She performed in front of Queen Victoria and other crowned heads of state and was even requested to knock the ashes of a cigarette held by the future Kaiser Wilhelm II.
Annie Oakley was a great role model for women at that time as she strongly believed that it was crucial for women to learn how to use a gun not only for physical and mental exercise, but more importantly to be able to defend themselves. It is believed that she taught around 15,000 women to use a gun. Apart from teaching women how to use a gun she also took part in women’s rights and other causes.
Annie Oakley has been presented on both stage and screen. Movies included Annie Oakley (1935) with Barbara Stanwyck in the main role and Annie Get Your Gun (1950) with Betty Hutton. Annie Get Your Gun was also a Broadway musical that starred Ethel Merman. From 1954 to 1956 Gail Davis played Oakley in the television series, Annie Oakley. Since then there have been many other appearances of Annie Oakley in movies and television series.
Other famous cowgirls include Martha Jane Canary-Burke better known as Calamity Jane, a frontier woman, professional scout and acquaintance of Wild Bill Hickok. She gained fame for fighting native American Indians, but was also known to be kind and compassionate towards others. However, she was also known to be an alcoholic and a prostitute. Like Annie Oakley, Calamity Jane has been portrayed frequently on screen in movies such as the 1948 comedy movie, The Paleface starring Jane Russell as Calamity Jane and my favorite, the 1953 musical movie, Calamity Jane starring Doris Day in the main role and Howard Keel as wild Bill Hickok.
Wearing a cowgirl outfit at Halloween or indeed any themed party will certainly get you noticed and be lots of fun.
